2012 Training Schedule

January 24, 2012 - BFD "Cold Case Files" :: 7:00pm at Biggersville Fire & Rescue North Station - Our own version of quality review and audits of "cold cases" comes in handy when honing our documentation skills. Some of a firefighter's skills are based on the ability to carefully document what he/she observes and does at an emergency scene. By randomly pulling old run reports from the Biggersville archives and reviewing them in a mock courtroom setting reinforces the importance of careful documentation with accurate accounts of activity on a scene.

February 28, 2012 - Assisting EMS Crews :: 7:00pm at Magnolia Regional Health Center EMS - This course is designed for Medical First Responders and Fire Fighters with medical training. We will look at the basic ICS, establishing Landing Zones for Medical Air Ambulances, familiarization with the interior of local ambulances, traffic control and safety concerns of medical calls.

March 27, 2012 - Interior Search Patterns :: 7:00pm at Biggersville Fire & Rescue South Station - This course will be conducted breathing 'live air' with full turnout gear and SCBA's. A maze with full-weight mannequins and life-like scenarios will be used to re-create situations that firefighters can quickly find themselves in. The skills developed during this course can easily save a Fire Fighter's live when acting in the line of duty.

April 24, 2012 - Engine Trivia :: 7:00pm at Biggersville Fire & Rescue North Station - The training class will be held between Biggersville's two primary engine companies. The name of a random piece of equipment will be pulled out of a hat and members will be timed on their ability to respond to the truck, retrieve the item and return to the starting point. The member with the fastest time wins that round. At the end of the evening, the grand prize winner receives a special treat and everyone gains a little knowledge about how the operate with their own equipment a little better.

May 26, 2012 - Hose Checks :: 7:00pm at Biggersville Fire & Rescue North Station - The training class will be held on the Saturday following the scheduled training session. Our annual testing of all the department's hoses and fittings are a very important part of our preventive maintenance program. This is an all-day project that leaves everyone tired and dirty, but we always find ways to make the day fun for everyone.

June 26, 2012 - Multi-Hazard School Fire :: 7:00pm at Biggersville Schools - This type of course is presented several times a year at Biggersville Fire & Rescue. All personnel report to their closest station and standby for traffic from a "dispatcher". Upon learning the location of a mock emergency, each crew responds to that scene as the normally would for the situation. Upon arrival, instructors begin to feed information to the crews about the location, hazards, what they are seeing and constructive 'problem solving' type discussion is used to walk through the incident. Traps and surprise situations usually pop up during the training that teaches the responders to quickly think and act on their feet.

July 24, 2012 - Landing Zone (LZ) Training :: 7:00pm at Biggersville Fire & Rescue North Station - We take this opportunity to familiarize all of our members with establishing safe landing zones for air ambulances. The class will start out at the BFD North Station Helipad to go over securing a pre-established landing area. After, we move to more rural settings and learn the importance of approach paths, helicopter safety and air marshalling.

August 28, 2012 - Driver Training :: 7:00pm at Biggersville Fire & Rescue North Station - The training class will be held to assist apparatus drivers to become more familiar with Biggersville's equipment and trucks. With the opening of the North Station and will be aimed to familiarize operators with new areas of fire protection that are not serviced frequently. This training will cover an obstacle course, emergency response, traffic safety and due regard to other motorist. A great refresher for any responder on the safety of driving safely.

September 25, 2012 - CPR/First Aid :: 7:00pm at Biggersville Fire & Rescue North Station - CPR and First Aid are basic skills that every firefighter should possess. We take this opportunity to participate in the American Heart Association's Healthcare Provider CPR Program and get familiar with the latest techniques and technology available, including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

October 10, 2012 - Nat'l Fire Prevention Week 2012 :: 10:00am at Biggersville Schools - Biggersville's participation in Fire Prevention Week has been a benchmark of the BFD's community outreach program. Members enjoy all ages of kids as AXE the Fire Dog makes a special appearance and kids are taught on subjects like properly displaying their address, knowing how and when to dial 9-1-1, to "get out and stay out", and the importance of a family emergency plan. Everyone receives free coloring books, crayons, stickers, a fire hat, plus much more!

November 27, 2012 - Medical & Firefighter Skills Testing :: 7:00pm at Biggersville Fire & Rescue South Station - This training session will test the knowledge of our members by presenting medical and firefighter general knowledge in the form of the popular television show JEOPARDY! Varying degrees of difficulty throughout a broad spectrum of information allows members to become engaged and hone their skills while having some fun with the other members of the department. This always makes for a fun evening and allows for some pretty exclusive bragging rights among members.

December 11, 2012 - NIMS Training :: 7:00pm at Biggersville Fire & Rescue North Station - The National Incident Management System (NIMS) provides a systematic, proactive approach to guide departments and agencies at all levels to work seamlessly to prevent, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of incidents, regardless of cause, size, location, or complexity, in order to reduce the loss of life and property and harm to the environment.
